Born August 11 1833, Robert Ingersoll was a humanist, American politician and lawyer. However, he was best known as “The Great Agnostic”. He was a popular critic of the Bible. He continuously challenged the people of his time to be more critical and to think harder about religious ideas.
During the Civil War, Robert Ingersoll served as a colonel in the Union Army. For this reason, his ashes were buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. And to honor his memory and works, a statue of him was erected in Peoria, Illinois while a museum about his life was opened in his birthplace in Lake Seneca in Dresden, New York.
