Roald Dahl was a British novelist. He was born on September 13, 1916. Prior to gaining prominence as a writer, he served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. In the 1940s, he gained recognition as a writer for both children and adults. His first children’s book, The Gremlins, was published in 1943.
It was, however, during the ’60s that he found substantial success as two of his greatest works were published — James and the Giant Peach, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He went on to write some of the well-known children’s stories of the 20th century, including Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, The Twits, and George’s Marvellous Medicine.
His accomplishments as a writer were rightfully acknowledged. He received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1983 and is widely considered as one of the greatest storytellers for children. Most of his works have also been adapted for the big screen. Even after his death in 1990, his legacy has surely lived on through his stories, inspiring children and adults alike.
