Author Mitch Albom was born on May 23, 1958. Interested in journalism, he took a job with the Queens Tribune. He later got into sports writing and landed a part-time job with SPORT magazine. After finishing college, he pursued a career in sports writing and freelanced in such publications as Sports Illustrated.
In the years that followed, he covered Olympic events in Europe where he’d pay for his own travels and sell his articles afterward. In the 1980s, he worked his way up getting hired as a feature writer and getting promoted as a columnist. Ultimately, he became a lead sports columnist for Detroit Free Press. During this time, Albom became a popular sportswriter and won several awards in the field.
In 1997, his breakthrough book Tuesdays with Morrie was published. One of the top-selling memoirs of all time, Tuesdays with Morrie has sold over 14 million copies. His follow-up work was the fiction book The Five People You Meet in Heaven published in 2003. Again, it was a huge success and was adapted into a TV movie for ABC.
