15203

Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869. He was a lawyer who practiced political ethics in his advocacies. He’s now known to the world as the man behind India’s independence from the Great Britain through nonviolent resistance.

Joining the Indian National Congress, he took on the mantle of leader in the 1920s. During this period, he spearheaded nationwide campaigns tackling poverty, women’s rights, religious harmony, and ending social exclusions. Most importantly, he advocated for Indian independence from British rule.

As means of political protest, Gandhi lived a very modest life, wore the the Indian loincloth to identify with India’s poor, and undertook 17 fasts. Gandi was imprisoned many times as a result of civil rights movements he had instigated and his opposition to foreign governance. In August 1947, Britain finally granted India its independence.

On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist. He died at the age of 78. Widely considered as the Father of the Nation in India, his day of birth, October 2, is also regarded as the International Day of Nonviolence.

As a proponent of nonviolent political stance, Gandhi inspired civil rights leaders across the globe. His morality, his ethics, and his faith in the goodness of humanity helped change the world. Here are enlightening Mahatma Gandhi quotes on truth, freedom, and harmony.
