Roman Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca, also known as Seneca the Younger, lived from 4 BC and AD 65 in Rome. He was trained in rhetoric and philosophy. In his early 40s, he was elected a public official, later gaining a seat in the Roman Senate. His earlier tenure as a senator was successful where he was commended for his oratory.
Some years later, however, he was exiled by the emperor Claudius after being accused of adultery. He was allowed to return after eight years to become Nero’s tutor, who, later would become Rome’s last emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He was Nero’s advisor during his reign, which proved successful during the first five years.
Over time, his influence over Nero declined. In his late 60s, he was accused of being complicit to assassinate Nero during the Pisonian conspiracy, forcing him to commit suicide. During his lifetime, Seneca was also known for his writings. Most of his creations were philosophical works and plays.
His work in prose was extensive with essays and letters tackling the subject of morality, all of which became an essential contribution to ancient Stoicism. For the generations that followed, Seneca’s influence grew immense, especially during the Renaissance period.
