U.S. senator from Georgia Jon Ossoff was born on February 16, 1987. After finishing his master’s degree from London School of Economics, he worked for Congressman Hank Johnson. During this period, he served as a national security staffer and legislative assistant where he was primarily involved in foreign affairs and defense policy.
Ossoff left this role and became the CEO of a documentary film outfit called Insight TWI, which investigates corruption in foreign countries. His political career took off after being chosen as the Democratic nominee in Georgia’s 2017 special election. Though he lost the race, he came to national attention, which helped him establish his own political network.
This led to him securing the Democratic nomination for the Senate election in Georgia in 2020, which he won. Ossoff was only 16 when he wrote a letter to U.S. representative and civil rights pioneer John Lewis, landing him volunteer work in the congressman’s office. He has not forgotten his ambition and his goal to serve his state and his country since then.
With his brilliance and appeal, especially among young people, he worked his way up the political ladder. His victory made him the youngest senator elected since 1980 at 33, and the first millennial to win a seat in the Senate. Ossoff’s success, despite his youth, also signals political change not just in his home state but that of the whole country.
