Read these Jane Goodall quotes because compassion can go a long way. It’s what the world needs on a daily basis.
Born on April 3, 1934, Jane Goodall‘s passion about animals and Africa led her to visit a friend in Kenya. There, she introduced herself to Kenyan archaeologist and paleontologist Louis Leakey. In 1960, Leakey sent her to Gombe Stream National Park to start her research on chimpanzees.
With no field training or college degree guiding her research, Goodall’s observations of chimpanzees were not set by scientific standards. She named her subjects and observed them to have unique personalities. Her research challenged the beliefs in the scientific community that only humans were capable of making tools and that chimpanzees were vegetarians.
She spent months in dangerous and remote areas, getting closer to chimps than anyone before her. In the next five years, National Geographic released a film about her research. She was also featured in numerous magazines. Goodall’s groundbreaking work on chimpanzees made her a celebrity.
More importantly, Goodall revolutionized science with the addition of an emotional component into her work. After over two decades of her study, she created the Jane Goodall Institute to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. Now in her eighties, Goodall’s work and the compassion behind it lives on.
