Read these 30 George R. R. Martin quotes for some words of wisdom — truths and fantasies intertwined.
American novelist George R. R. Martin was born on September 20, 1948. He earned a degree in Journalism and graduated summa cum laude. In the 1970s, Martin worked as an English and Journalism instructor. He eventually resigned to become a full-time writer.
The first story he sold was “The Hero”, published in the February 1971 issue of Galaxy magazine. His first ever novel, Dying of the Light, was published in 1977. Martin also worked as a writer in Hollywood for the TV shows The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast.
Feeling frustrated with his television writing career, Martin returned to writing novels. Admiring the works of J. R. R. Tolkien as a child, he decided to write an epic fantasy. This is where his greatest work, A Song of Ice and Fire, came about.
The first, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996. It was followed by A Clash of Kings in 1998 and A Storm of Swords in 2000. In 2005, A Feast for Crows was published and became The New York Times No. 1 Bestseller. Six years later, A Dance with Dragons was published, also becoming an international bestseller.
George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire reached greater popularity after HBO purchased the television rights for the book series. Titled Game of Thrones, it has since become one of the most prominent shows in the history of television.
Martin certainly didn’t have it easy. He had experienced numerous setbacks before he finally found his place in the world of literature. Now he’s one of the most prominent and influential writers we know today.
