American novelist Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899. His writing career started as a reporter for The Kansas City Star. He left his job to enlist as an ambulance driver in World War I. In the early 1920s, he moved to Paris where he worked as a foreign correspondent. Soon after, his debut novel The Sun Also Rises was published in 1926.

Hemingway’s experiences during the war prompted him to create the novel A Farewell to Arms, which was published in 1929. In the following decade, Hemingway was a journalist in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. His 1940 novel For Whom the Bell Tolls was based on his life there. During World War II, Hemingway joined the US troops at the Normandy landings as a journalist. He was also present during the Liberation of Paris.

His most successful novel — The Old Man and the Sea — was published in 1952. He wrote its draft for eight weeks after his previous novel Across the River and into the Trees received negative critical reception. The Old Man and the Sea ended up becoming his best work, cementing him to international fame.

It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was also a major contributing factor to Hemingway winning the Nobel Prize in Literature two years later. However, during this period, the author suffered serious injuries from two successive plane crashes, leaving him in pain and poor health until his death on July 2, 1961.

Throughout his life, Hemingway published seven novels, six short story collections, and two nonfiction books. Several of his works are considered as American literature classics. Here are 30 Ernest Hemingway quotes to help you strengthen your will… and yourself.
