William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor. Between 1585 and 1592, he became part of the London theatre scene. While it’s not known when he began writing, records of performances found that many of his plays were performed during this period.
Shakespeare, along with other players, formed the company Lord Chamberlain’s Men. His plays were exclusively performed by the company, which ultimately became the leading playing company in London. A royal patent then changed its name to the King’s Men.
In the early 1600s, he continued his work as an actor despite his massive success as a playwright. In his late 40s, his involvement in theatre and performing grew scarce that it was assumed he had retired. He died some years later at the age of 52.
As a playwright, Shakespeare initially wrote comedies and histories, although his rise to fame was mainly attributed to the creations of the tragedies Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. Up to this day, these plays are performed in theatres across the world. They also continue to be actively studied and interpreted.
Regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, Shakespeare’s words resonate with us – may it be about love, friendship, or the truths of the world. Here are 33 William Shakespeare quotes that can help guide you as you navigate the tricky roads of life.
